Although WES is a safe place for students, concerns may arise over the course of the year. It is the goal of the school counseling program to ensure the safety and well-being of all students by eliminating barriers to learning. It is my role to provide educational experiences, in cooperation with the home and community, that prepare students for lifelong learning and for ethical, productive participation in a democratic society and the global community. In order to meet student needs, various counseling services are offered, and it is encouraged that your child take full advantage of these services.
Counseling Services Offered:
Short-term Individual Counseling
I work with students individually on an as needed basis to help students confront and solve problems that interfere with their academic, career, or social/emotional development. Students can be referred for individual counseling by teachers or parents, or may self-refer. My goal through individual counseling is to help give students the skills needed to help them have success in school. I work individually with students on a number of issues including emotional management, coping strategies, social skills, processing thoughts and feelings, anxiety, behavioral management, and conflict management.
Small Group Counseling
Group counseling is intended for students to discuss shared concerns with peers. Group topics may include: changing families groups (for children whose families are experiencing a separation, divorce or remarriage), loss and transition groups (for children who have experienced a major loss), emotional management, stress management, and leadership. Parent permission is required for students to participate in any small group.
Classroom Guidance Lessons
I deliver a comprehensive guidance curriculum to all WES students. This consists of class discussions and hands-on activities to enhance student learning. These lessons cover a number of topics including: skills for learning, character education, college and career readiness, empathy, emotional management, goal setting, and problem solving. I may also provide lessons to individual classrooms based on demonstrated needs and teacher requests.
Collaboration with School Staff
I work with teachers, support staff, and administration to develop and implement plans and interventions for students. I keep in regular communication with school staff to determine the effectiveness of individual and small group counseling, and the guidance curriculum. This team approach is imperative to the success of all students.
Collaboration with Community
I believe that all people involved in a child's education should work together. I welcome parent input and work to create open lines of communication with families. Also, a crucial part of the school counselor's job is to work with community agencies.
